Marine Corps Marathon Fueling Plan: Mile-by-Mile Strategy
Two things separate the Marine Corps Marathon from every other big American marathon, and both of them are about what the course doesn't give you.
The sports drink at all twelve water points is Nuun Endurance. A full 16-ounce serving carries about 16 grams of carbohydrate and 380 milligrams of sodium. A race cup holds four to six ounces. That puts every cup you take at roughly 5 grams of carbohydrate, half of what a cup of Gatorade Endurance gives you at Boston or Chicago. If your plan quietly assumes the drink is doing 20 or 30 grams an hour of work, you'll cross the line 100 grams short and never work out where it went.
The second thing: there are three gel stations on the entire course, all of them handing out UnTapped pure maple syrup. Whatever you intend to eat on Sunday, October 25, you are carrying it yourself.
Then there's the shape of the course, which is strange for a race with 699 feet of gain. Roughly 240 of that lands in the first three miles. Another 40 lands in the final tenth. In between, you get twenty miles that are flatter than Chicago. Plan around that distribution rather than the total, which the Marine Corps Marathon race guide breaks out mile by mile. Note too that the 7:20 a.m. gun on Route 110 means breakfast at 3:30 or 4:30 in the morning, or a split breakfast with something small closer to the start.
The on-course product problem
Start here, because it changes every other number in your plan. Count the Nuun as hydration and sodium. Count it as zero carbohydrate. If it gives you a few grams, treat that as a rounding error in your favor.
The UnTapped packets are 26 grams of carbohydrate each and essentially no sodium: 5 milligrams in the plain Maple and Coffee, about 60 in the salted flavor. Maple syrup is mostly sucrose, so the glucose-to-fructose split is fine for absorption. The problem is texture. It's thick, it demands water, and mile 24 of a marathon is a terrible place to discover how your gut handles a syrup gel you've never trained on.
So build the plan around your own supply. At 75 to 90 grams an hour, that's one 40g gel (SiS Beta Fuel, Maurten 160) every 25 to 30 minutes, or one 22-25g gel (GU Energy, Maurten Gel 100) every 15 to 20 minutes. If you've trained your gut for it, push toward 100g/hr. The flat middle of this course will support it. Start to mile 5: Rosslyn, Spout Run, and a three-mile water gap
The gun goes off on Route 110 between the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery, and mile 1 is flat. Take your first gel there.
Eight or nine minutes into a marathon feels far too early to eat. Look at what happens if you don't. At goal pace, a normal 25-minute first gel lands somewhere between mile 2.4 and mile 3.5. Mile 2.4 is near the top of the Rosslyn climb, which gains about 190 feet from the mile 1 marker to the high point around 2.6. Mile 3.5 is the start of the Spout Run descent, the fastest running you'll do all day. Neither is a place you want to be fumbling with a packet.
There's a support problem stacked on top of the terrain problem. Water point 1 sits around mile 2 on Langston Boulevard. Water point 2 is in Georgetown around mile 5. That's a three-mile gap across the steepest ground of the day, and it's the thinnest stretch of support on the course. A mile 1 gel is the one you can most reliably wash down.
If eating at mile 1 is genuinely beyond you, hold it until you're off Spout Run and back on the flat Parkway just before mile 4. Just know you're starting behind and you'll spend the middle of the race catching up.
One pacing note that's really a fueling note: don't chase Spout Run. Mile 4 drops about 150 feet, and the full fall from the high point near mile 2.6 is roughly 215 feet across a mile and a half. It is free speed and it will pull you 20 seconds a mile under goal pace without your permission. The bill comes due twice, as quad damage at mile 22 and as a stomach that won't take anything on Hains Point.
Miles 5-10: Georgetown and the Rock Creek out-and-back
Key Bridge takes you into Georgetown with a 50-foot rise in mile 5 and hands it right back in mile 6. Water points at miles 5, 7, and 9 mean support finally becomes routine. Take your second gel on the flat approach to Georgetown around mile 5 or 6, while there's a table to chase it with.
The Rock Creek Parkway out-and-back through miles 7 to 10 runs past the Kennedy Center and never moves more than eight feet in either direction. It's quiet, it's uneventful, and it's the first stretch where your fueling cadence should be running on autopilot. Third gel around mile 9 with water. If you're at 75g/hr and started at mile 1, you should have three down by the time the course turns onto Ohio Drive.
Miles 11-15: Hains Point is the engine room
Nothing happens on Hains Point. That's the point.
Elevation stays between 0 and 10 feet for the entire loop through East Potomac Park. There's a water point at mile 11, another near the tip around mile 13, and the first UnTapped station approaching mile 14. No crowds to speak of, no grade, no wind protection either, and nothing to think about except your splits and your stomach. This is where you bank the carbohydrate that has to carry you through the last ten miles.
The complication is the wear blue Mile at mile 12. It is the most moving stretch of any American marathon, and it reliably makes runners forget to eat for fifteen minutes. Set a watch alarm before the gun. Not a reminder to think about fueling, an alarm that goes off at your gel interval and doesn't care what you're feeling.
If you're running 75 to 90 grams an hour, you want four to five gels down by the time you leave East Potomac Park around mile 15.5. That is the checkpoint. Anything less and you're relying on the second half of a course that gets progressively worse at letting you catch up.
Miles 16-19: the Mall, the Capitol, and the gel that matters most
The course climbs onto Independence Avenue with about 14 feet in mile 16 and 10 in mile 17, then gives back 18 through the Capitol loop in mile 18. These are crowded, tangent-heavy miles that run faster than they feel, with water points at 16, 17, and 19.
Take a gel around mile 18.5, at the second UnTapped station or from your own supply.
This is the most important fueling decision on the course, and the timing is the whole argument. A gel takes 15 to 20 minutes to reach your bloodstream. One taken at 18.5 is working by the time you hit 14th and D at mile 20, which is exactly when the course stops being a city marathon and starts being a wind tunnel. Wait until you feel like you need something on the bridge itself and you'll be eating late, climbing, and exposed.
Miles 20-21.5: Beat the Bridge and the 14th Street span
Beat the Bridge sits at mile 20 at 14th and D. From there the 14th Street Bridge runs to about mile 21.5 with a 16-foot rise, full wind exposure, and no spectators. The only water on the span is a self-serve cupless station.
Nothing about that mile and a half is a good place to open a packet. Wind, no crowd noise to distract you, a long sightline that makes it feel twice as long as it is, and no volunteer handing you anything. Drink at the Jefferson Drive water point before you get on, and cross with the 18.5 gel already absorbed and doing work.
If you carry a soft flask, this is the stretch that justifies it. The cupless station means you either brought something to fill or you drink nothing between roughly mile 19 and mile 22.
Miles 22-26.2: Crystal City, the Pentagon, and Marshall Drive
The last six miles are flat and quiet through Crystal City and past the Pentagon, and they are where under-fueled runners come apart. There is no terrain to blame. Water at mile 22, a refill station on Crystal Drive around mile 23, then the third UnTapped station with water and Nuun at Long Bridge Park approaching mile 24.
Take your last gel there at the latest, or earlier from your own supply if you'd rather not gamble on maple syrup at mile 24. It needs to be in you by then, because Route 110 starts tilting up around mile 25.5, and the final tenth up Marshall Drive to the Marine Corps War Memorial climbs about 40 feet.
That last tenth is the steepest grade on the course outside the first three miles, and it arrives at the worst possible moment. Whether it reads as a hard finish or a disaster comes down almost entirely to what you ate on Hains Point.
Weather and the sodium problem
The 16-year race-day average is 55°F, with a typical range of 46 to 64°F and a 7:20 a.m. start around 51°F. That's close to ideal. Cool conditions mean better gut absorption, which argues for running at the top of the 75 to 90 gram range rather than the bottom.
On a genuinely cold year, two things change. Thirst gets blunted, so you drink less than you need without noticing, and gels thicken up and require real effort to get down through gloves. The bigger risk is sodium, and it's a structural problem with what MCM puts on the road. The two things on offer are a nearly sodium-free maple gel and a four-ounce cup of Nuun. That combination is worth roughly 120 milligrams of sodium per stop. On a 55°F day, fine. Late October in DC has also produced 70-plus degree years with real humidity, and this is a slow-moving, crowded course where a mid-pack runner is still out there past noon.
If the forecast is above 65°F or you're a heavy salty sweater, raise your fluid intake 15 to 20 percent and carry your own salt capsules. Nobody on this course is going to hand you enough.
Hydration on course
Twelve water points carry water and Nuun Endurance: roughly miles 2, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 16, 17, 19, 22, 24, and 25. Add the self-serve cupless station on the 14th Street Bridge near mile 21 and a water refill station on Crystal Drive around mile 23. MCM also publishes numbered aid stations, but those are medical, not fueling. Don't plan around them.
The gaps worth writing on your arm are the three miles between water point 1 and Georgetown, and the stretch from mile 19 across the bridge to mile 22 where the only option is self-serve. Everything else comes at roughly two-mile spacing, which is enough to chase every gel with fluid as long as you time your gels to land near a table rather than between them.
One habit that pays off here more than at most races: slow down enough at the table to actually drink. Four ounces of Nuun taken properly is your sodium for that segment. Four ounces worn down your front is nothing.
